US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, long-known for his attachment to Israel, was in the country over the weekend for a visit with Israeli PM Netanyahu. Perhaps buoyed by Trump's plan to ethnically cleanse Gaza, Bibi decided to push one step further, announcing that the US and Israel need to "finish the job" against Iran. The wailing sound you heard last Thursday was the chorus of the Beltway warmongers shrieking in despair at President Trump’s suggestion that there was no reason for the United States to be spending one trillion dollars on “defense.” “…[O]ne of the first meetings I want to have is with President Xi of China and President Putin of Russia, and I want to say let’s cut our military budget in half. And we can do that, and I think we’ll be able to do that,” the President told reporters. With this statement, President Trump blew up one of the biggest myths of our time, particularly among Republicans, that spending more on the military is essential to keeping us safe. There is a vast and well-funded network of political and industrial interests that depend on maintaining that myth, from the weapons manufacturers to the mainstream media to the think tanks and beyond. Why? Because most of what is called “defense spending” has little to do with defending this country and a lot to do with enriching the politically well-connected. Maintaining that global military empire has bankrupted the United States while making us less safe and less free. President Trump seems to understand this. But the military-industrial complex and its cheerleaders have for decades pushed the idea that we could not survive without continuously increasing their budgets. Thanks to the work of the “Department of Government Efficiency” we are learning that much of what has been sold as “essential spending” is nothing of the sort. Take USAID, for example. We were led to believe that this agency was feeding the poor while promoting the best kind of American values overseas. Thanks to DOGE, we learned that the money was going to absurdities like funding transgender puppet shows in Peru. We are also learning that a great deal of USAID money was going to actually overthrow democratic governments overseas – as well as manipulate foreign media and promote censorship of “dissident” voices at home and abroad. Not only was USAID not helping countries overseas – it was actually harming them! Just as with USAID, when we are able to see just where that one trillion military budget is going Americans are going to fully realize that they have been lied to for decades. That is why we need a full audit of the Pentagon and full transparency of the results. We also need a change in policy. Americans are beginning to understand the economic costs of maintaining a global military empire. US taxpayers are forced to cover more than half of the entire NATO budget while European countries rattle sabers at Russia and threaten war. If Europe feels so threatened by Russia, why don’t they cover the costs of their own defense? Why do poor Americans have to pay for the defense of rich Europeans? Haven’t we had enough of this? I very much hope that President Trump follows through with his plan to drastically reduce our bloated military budget. We can start by closing the hundreds of military bases overseas, bringing back our troops from foreign countries, and eliminating our massive commitments to NATO and other international organizations. We will be richer, safer, and happier.
President Trump likes to keep everyone on their toes. He has repeatedly proven to say things that (in the end) were perhaps never meant to be taken seriously in the first place. Sometimes the president's statements contain terrible ideas, like the U.S. owning Gaza. But at other times, his statements are pretty incredible, like the U.S. cutting military spending by 50% if Russia and China agree to do the same. Today on the Liberty Report, we cover the latter statement, which would be a huge positive for our nation, were it ever to come to pass.
And all of a sudden...the end began. President Trump holds a 90 minute phone call with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, agreeing to soon hold a summit of the two leaders. Trump's read-out of the call makes it clear that his pro-Ukraine "Special Envoy" Kellogg is out of the picture. Is peace on the horizon? What will it take? Also today, the mis-named National Endowment for Democracy is defunded.

Politico is reporting today that US government employees in the General Services Administration are experiencing "anxiety" when Trump Administration officials from the Department of Government Efficiency request an interview to assess the employee's skills and work performance. Also today: Trump fires USAID official critical of changes at that agency. Finally...SecDef Hegseth drops a bomb: "No NATO for Ukraine."
With Trump now confirming that he has spoken with Russian president Putin - the first talk between US and Russian heads of state since 2022 - what will be his strategy to fulfill his promise to end the war? Will he exert "maximum pressure" on both sides? Will he hand off the hot potato to the Europeans? Also today: Trump's new steel tariffs - good move?

This week, President Trump upended US Middle East policy by announcing that the United States would “take over” war-ravaged Gaza and turn it into “the Riviera of the Middle East.” President Trump also said the Palestinians living in Gaza would be (temporarily?) relocated to Jordan or Egypt. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul came out strongly against the proposal. Senator Paul pointed out that the plan contradicted the American people’s vote for “America First.” What was more surprising was that South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham expressed skepticism about sending Americans to take over Gaza. This may be the first time in Senator Graham’s political career that he has opposed sending US troops abroad. Senator Graham is correct that most South Carolinians are not excited about sending Americans or US tax dollars to take over Gaza. Neither are most other Americans. In fact, polls show that the majority of Americans oppose providing military aid to Israel or other countries. One of the best comments was made by libertarian scholar and podcaster Tom Woods. He suggested that Trump’s Gaza proposal is the type of wasteful overseas spending that DOGE should be working to eliminate. Trump’s plan has also been criticized by the government of Saudi Arabia. This could mean that if President Trump follows through with this proposal it will further push Saudi Arabia away from the United States and toward the BRICS alliance. Some of the BRICS nations want to challenge the dollar’s world reserve currency status. One of the foundations of the dollar’s world reserve currency status is the “petrodollar.” This arose from the deal Henry Kissinger negotiated with Saudi Arabia where the Saudis agreed to use dollars for oil trade in exchange for US support for the Saudi regime. Recently, Saudi Arabia has given signs that it will be willing to use other currencies, such as the Chinese renminbi, for its oil trade. The loss of the dollar’s world reserve currency status would cause a major US economic crisis. It would force the government to make massive cuts in warfare and welfare spending and could lead to violence and a government crackdown on our liberty. US “ownership” of Gaza, accompanied by forcible relocation of Palestinians, would cause increased resentment of the US. This could result in increased terror attacks against the US. Even if a long-term US occupation of Gaza went 100 percent according to plan, the US government, which has an over 36 trillion dollars and growing debt, cannot afford another open-ended overseas military commitment. Instead, President Trump should follow though on his campaign rhetoric about withdrawing from unnecessary military commitments. This, not tariffs, will help make America more competitive on the international economy. The best thing the United States can do to rebuild Gaza and promote peace in the Middle East is to stop funding Israel’s occupation and blockade of Gaza. Instead, the US should work toward peaceful relations backed by free trade with Israel and its neighbors.

DOGE is ripping through the federal government like a tornado. This morning it has been reporting that DOGE sent out firing notices to 9,400 USAID employees, leaving only 611. Democratic politicians are furious, of course. But we hope, that when it’s all said and done, ALL politicians, Democrat AND Republican, are furious with DOGE. Then we will know that it was a job well done for the American people.
A look behind the curtain has revealed a horrific truth: Nearly the entire mainstream media - worldwide - has been funded by the US government under the USAID. From the BBC to the New York Times and Politico... At this point it might be easier to find out who USAID has NOT funded in the media sphere!
